THUNDER BAY – The owner of a townhouse rented to students on Varsity Place has been issued tickets for failing to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, after there was a complaint and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue inspected the unit.
"Only working smoke alarms can give you the early warning you need to escape a fire," Deputy Fire Chief Dave Tarini said in a press release on Friday.
“Smoke alarm violations will result in a ticket.”
A set fine of $360 is issued and individuals could potentially be fined up to $50,000 and corporations up to $100,000 for violations of Part 3 of the Ontario Building Code, which includes smoke alarms.
Landlords are required to test rental suite smoke and carbon monoxide alarms annually or when there is a change in tenancy. Records are required for these tests.
Landlords must also give tenants manufacturer instructions for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
