THUNDER BAY – Now that the winter snow is finally here to stay, all types of skiers are excited to get to once again enjoy the sport they love.
Lappe Nordic Ski Club has been able to open up nine of its 15 kilometres of skiing trails and Tuija Puiras, owner of the ski club, said that people were very happy with the midwinter skiing conditions the region is seeing after so long without any snow.
“What we did when we only had a trace of snow, our caretaker here, he kept shovelling and packing snow and it was minimal,” she said. “But the little bit on the trails helped when the snow actually came and then we got quickly on our skis.”
Puiras said that late snow isn’t unheard of for the club, but it's unusual for it to come this late in the season.
“At one point in time, we had our Boxing Day race on Surprise Lake ice because we didn’t have snow. And another year, similarly, we had just a 500-metre loop that we had shovelled,” she said. “But this year is, I think, extraordinary - with only nine kilometres so far.”
With more snow in the forecast, Puiras said that they expect to be able get the rest of their trails open for skiers.
“Now it’s just a question of packing and if we get one more good snowfall, then we can get out with the big machine that we have been grooming with,” she said.
