THUNDER BAY — Calls for service to the OPP's Thunder Bay detachment more than doubled last week over the week before.

During the week of April 14 to 20, provincial police answered 609 calls, compared to 291 reported the previous week.

This represents a 109 per cent increase week over week.

Most of those incidents were eTicket-related, a total of 432 calls, followed by a dramatic drop to 23 incidents for R.I.D.E. programs and 20 calls for property checks.

During this time period, OPP laid a total of 316 charges, only 10 of which related to the criminal code. The bulk of the incidents were for Highway Traffic Act violations, with officers laying 306 traffic charges.

The OPP is reminding the public about its online reporting system, Citizen Self Reporting, which can be used as an alternative to having an officer attend a scene for minor incidents.

These numbers are not representative of police activity in the city at large, as the Thunder Bay Police Service has jurisdiction over the municipality itself and tracks calls for service separately.
