Latest driveway scam costs elderly resident $79K

Police have received multiple complaints about aggressive, and possibly fraudulent, individuals offering driveway repairs
Thunder Bay Police Service station

THUNDER BAY — City police are continuing to caution local homeowners about ongoing driveway scams.

In one of the latest instances, which police disclosed on Tuesday, an elderly victim paid $79,000 for driveway paving.

Another incident last month had a different elderly victim asked for $100,000, and made a $30,000 payment before family members intervened.

Police said they are receiving complaints about aggressive, and possibly fraudulent, salespeople offering driveway repairs and other resurfacing services.

These individuals might use intimidation tactics and target vulnerable residents, police added.

Anyone approached has the right to close their door or hang up the phone. Police said people should contact a possible service provider by looking up their contact information, and to not use information provided by a suspected fraudster.

More information about ongoing scams and frauds is available on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.
