THUNDER BAY -- Construction on Legion Track Drive will pause on Saturday to better facilitate traffic at Fort William Stadium for the high school football finals.

Project engineer Matthew Miedema said work has progressed to the pre-asphalt stage and the contractor has agreed to take most of Saturday off to accommodate football fans.

"The contractor is finishing up the last of the curb work today, and then from there they're going to be prepping everything for asphalt next week," Miedema said

The plan is to have the roadway paved from Victoria Avenue to the end of Delaney Arena by next Wednesday, with the continued warmer-than-usual weather lengthening the paving season a few extra days

As for football traffic, motorists should be good to enter Legion Track Drive in both directions by late morning on Saturday.

"Work will be progressing into next week, but we're cognizant there are big football games this weekend and so they'll be opening the road from Victoria Avenue and the back way on Brunswick Street. Both entrances will be open so people will have access here and construction will be shut down for the day," Miedema said

"So there will be lots of parking restored there."

Construction was supposed to begin in early summer, but delays pushed the work back to a late August start
