Elf! The Musical

Magnus Theatre is truly bringing Christmas magic to its main stage with Elf! The Musical.

The play tells a heartwarming story based on the beloved 2003 film “Elf”, which follows the story of Buddy, a human raised by Santa's elves at the North Pole. Buddy's journey is filled with mishaps, unlikely friendships, and a growing sense of love for his newfound family.

With catchy songs, festive dancing, and plenty of heart, Elf! The Musical is a joyous celebration of the holiday season that reminds audiences of the power of love, kindness, and the magic of Christmas.

Magnus Theatre pulled out all the stops with the set design for the story of Buddy the Elf, creating an immersive environment that perfectly complemented the whimsical tone of the production. The theatre's fly system was also put to great use throughout the show. The seamless transitions between scenes, and the striking backdrop changes added a dynamic layer to the experience.

The set also laid out plenty of room to fit the massive 16 person cast as they threw themselves into the extravagant dance numbers. Makayla Moore Choreographed the show and did an amazing job... especially when one takes into consideration that Elf! The Musical is the first full length show she choreographed.

The entire cast delivered an exceptional performance, barring a few opening night stumbles that were recovered from remarkably well. They truly managed to capture the energy, emotion, and heart of the original film. With such a large cast, it wold be near impossible to get to them all but there were a few stand-out performances on opening night.

Buddy the Elf was brought to life in spectacular fashion by Alex Fellowes Smith, who is making his Magnus debut with a truly flawless performance. From the very first moment he stepped onto the stage, it was clear that Smith had a deep understanding of the character, fully embodying Buddy’s infectious enthusiasm, childlike wonder, and unrelenting optimism.

Gaelan Beatty is also making his Magnus debut in the dual roles of Fulton Greenway and a fake Santa, and he certainly made a lasting impression. His performance was excellent throughout, but it was particularly noteworthy during the song “The Story of Buddy the Elf,” when he was given the opportunity to show off his impressive singing voice.

Chloe Sproule is one of two talented actors who plays the role of Michael Hobbs, and she absolutely shines in the part. What truly stood out was Sproule's incredible voice—man, can this kid sing! This performance also marks Sproule's debut at Magnus, and she certainly did not disappoint. For her first professional performance, she demonstrated remarkable skill and stage presence, seamlessly integrating into the cast and delivering an outstanding portrayal of Michael Hobbs.

She encourages everyone to see the show.

“This show is full of laughter, full of love, full of happiness and everyone has so much fun,” she said. “I love the cast and it’s a beautiful show.”

Overall Elf! The Musical is a truly remarkable way for Magnus to celebrate the Christmas season.

9/10

Due to high demand, the show will run for an extra week until December 21. Further information on the play can be found on the Magnus website.
