LETTER: Politicians must do something about our local highways

In the case of operating a CMV or any other motorized unit on our major highways, we are the "choice maker and controller".
letter-to-the-editor

To the editor,

I am taking this time to express how dangerous events can be while travelling on our major highways - 11/17. In this particular case an SUV/CMV were involved in a " head-on " collision that appeared to have taken place on a curve (as per the photo in the news article).

So, for those of us who travel the two major highways on a regular basis, there must be a sense of fear when a CMV is seen passing in a "no passing" area or when there are four or five transports " bunched up" - not allowing any vehicle to pass.

There have been several accidents/incidents this year since the start of May and weather was not necessarily the contributing factor but, wait until winter comes upon us. How many more accidents/incidents and deaths is it going to take before MPPs , OPP and MTO personnel sit down at the table to come up  with a " resolution " that will make travellers feel comfortable and anxiety free while going from point A - B?

I have mentioned in past letters to the editor that as a safety professional, I am very frustrated, angered and confused as to why the percentage of these accidents/incidents is not declining. There has been very little mention for improvements on the involvement of accidents/incidents from MPPs (Lise Vaugeois- Thunder Bay Superior - NDP; Greg Rickford - Kenora Rainy River - PC; and Marcus Powlowski - Thunder Bay Rainy River - Lib) as well as from the media.

From my past reviews on the matter, the problem lies solely with CMV driver error, misjudgment or simply running a gauntlet. There is a book called "The Choice" by Dr. Edith Eva Eger who stresses that we make choices and we must deal with that choice being made.

In the case of operating a CMV or any other motorized unit on our major highways, we are the "choice maker and controller".

Again, something needs to be done on this matter and we should not have to wait for a new government to fix a problem left by those who are still in power to do something.

If MPPs and service providers lost a family member due to a accident/incident, would that make a cause for action to take place ?
