THUNDER BAY – The criminal case against the suspended police chief J.P. Levesque continues to move ahead with a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
Levesque was not present at the Thunder Bay Courthouse on Tuesday and was represented by lawyer Neil McCartney, who appeared acting as an agent on behalf of Levesque’s Toronto lawyer Fredrick Schumann.
A judicial pre-trial will be held on Wednesday via teleconference, with an out of jurisdiction judge presiding over the hearing.
The Thunder Bay Police Service chief in May was charged by the OPP with obstructing justice and breach of trust, which according to court records was the result of allegations that he disclosed confidential information relating to Thunder Bay mayor Keith Hobbs last December. The laying of the charges came at the end of a five-month investigation that began at the request of the RCMP.
Levesque, who is not in custody, was on medical leave when the charges were laid and was placed on administrative suspension by the police services board later that week. Deputy chief Sylvie Hauth is serving as acting police chief.
The charges have not been proven in court.
