THUNDER BAY -- Allan Height's camping trip turned into a rescue mission.
Height, an avid outdoorsman, was enjoying a day on Lake Nipigon when he came across a baby moose and his mother swimming.
The pair eventually went in different directions and when Height came back to the area a few hours later he found the calf alone again.
“He was just a young fella so I figured he probably wasn’t going to make it on his own, so I figured he needed a little push along his way,” Height said.
Height couldn’t pull the calf into his boat so he guided the young moose to where the mother was last seen on shore.
Height, who enjoys hunting and fishing, spends a fair amount of time in nature but he was surprised to see the action unfold.
“It seemed odd,” Height said. “I’ve never seen [the mother] leave them for that length of time.”
Height said the moose seemed like a capable swimmer, but still appeared to be shivering from the water temperature.
“It just made sense to help him along his way,” Height said. “Even though I hunt and fish, I still need to look after what we have.”
After basking in the sun to warm up, Height said the calf eventually made his way back to his mother.
