THUNDER BAY — Counterbalancing mental health issues with optimism is what inspired Local Indigenous Folk artist Sara Kae’s new single.

The single "One Good Reason", was released on Jan. 10.

Kae said the meaning of the song is coming to her even as she listens to it as a final product.

“I wrote the song more subconsciously than I realized. I had been struggling on and off with feeling empty, and falling deeper into it without realizing.

“After listening back to it, I wrote the song challenging where my mind was going and how easy it really can be to fall into that sadness,” Kae said.

The song's music and melody are warm, engaging and teeming with brighter sonic hues. There is some sweet mandolin and guitar work in the songs final stretch.

“My dad played music. I remember hearing music and having that connection.”

Kae said it was at age 12 when she’d stepped onto a stage seriously and with determination for the first time.

“Around the age of 12 was when it clicked for me that this is something I’d really like to do and connect with people this way.”

Music is vulnerable, Kae said, adding that she hopes people can listen to her story and have comfort, and feel less alone in what they may be feeling.

Kae said her definition of a successful musician has changed in recent years in understanding how difficult a creative career really is.

“I just want to be able to write a song and play for people full-time. That’s the goal I’m wanting to reach,” she said.

Kae’s new song along with her other music, is available for streaming on Spotify.
