A local business wants to buy city land to expand its operations.
Dutchak Scrap Metal owner Lori Dutchak went to city council Monday asking that the city sell her Hammond Street business a piece of city-owned land next door so she can build a processing facility there.
Dutchak told council that since 1992, the business has expanded from a 500 square-foot building with one employee to a five acre operation with 20 people working there with over $5 million in assets.
“We’re bursting at the seams,” she said.
If the city doesn’t sell the land to her though, it would mean cutbacks to the business.
“We’ll have to layoff definitely, Dutchak said. “We’re out of room.”
Dutchak apologized to council as she began her deputation for some harsh words she’s used over the past year while trying to get the land. But now that city council will meet in a closed-session next week to discuss the sale, Dutchak said it looks like things may be happening now.
“Hopefully things work out in our favour and don’t’ have to come back here,” Dutchak said to media after the deputation, surrounded by employees.
