THUNDER BAY — Organizers of an event scheduled for Thunder Bay next week say they are trying to help local seniors continue to live comfortably in their own homes.
The "Age Friendly GIANTS" are hosting presentations, discussions and a trade show at the CLE Heritage Building on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
GIANTS is an acronym for Grand Individuals Aging with Neighbours in Thunder Bay.
The city has one of the highest percentages of seniors in Ontario as well as one of the highest proportions of seniors managing their own households or living alone on low incomes.
Spokesperson Nancy Angus says GIANTS wanted to bring as many people as possible together to continue conversations the group has organized for seniors over the past six months.
At these events, Angus said, "more than 100 seniors have shared tips as well as trusted businesses that have helped them to feel comfortable in their homes."
She said the upcoming event will also give participants a chance to talk face-to-face with some of the people they may need to hire to help with tasks such as grass-cutting, roto-tilling, dog-walking, grocery delivery or dump runs.
"The GIANTS team is confident that bringing seniors together for learning and conversation is a starting point for achieving positive change," Angus said.
Businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations which provide services to businesses will also be represented at the CLE gathering.
Panel discussions will be held on solo housing, co-housing and government programs for homeowners.
The formal portion of the afternoon will conclude with a presentation on decluttering a home, while the trade show portion will continue to 6 p.m.
There is no charge for admission.
Refreshments will be served.
