THUNDER BAY -- Most people don't live to see 100.

But obviously Esther Campbell isn't most people. For her being a centenarian is already old news as she celebrated her 103 rd birthday with family and friends Thursday afternoon.

"It's great to have a mother living that long and then being with her all of these years it's just tremendous," her son Allan Campbell said.

Esther was born in Stanley where she took up an active lifestyle that would serve her well for the next century. Keeping fit, along with good genes, being moderate with alcohol and quitting smoking at the young age of 65 also helped her reach 100 and beyond. Esther always grew her own food and ate well too her son said.

"She was in every activity they had when she was growing up," Allan said.

While working for the Red Cross in Kakabeka Falls and on its train car that served Nipigon, she met Chester Campbell. The two would settle in Geraldton and raise three children, which would result in numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Before her party, Esther spent the day with her granddaughter Karen at Carlo & G Hair and Esthetics, a tradition since she turned 100.

The salon gives her a 100 per cent discount to help celebrate.
