Lucky the lobster getting a lift from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg

Social media and news stories have created a big following for the toy's cross-country journey.

THUNDER BAY — Lucky the lobster's journey from Prince Edward Island to Alberta is resuming after just a short stay in the Thunder Bay area.

The stuffed toy is riding in a full-size lobster trap gifted to an Alberta couple earlier this year during a visit to PEI.

They couldn't take the trap with them on their flight home, but have successfully used TikTok and Lucky's growing fame on social media to find volunteer drivers in every province along the way.

The trap carries a sign that states "I need a ride as far as you can take me."

On Tuesday, during a visit to the Terry Fox Monument near Thunder Bay, Sudbury resident Theresa Handrigan turned Lucky over to two other travellers who had learned about the toy lobster's road trip from a news story.

"We heard on the news that they were looking for somebody to take him from Thunder Bay farther west, and being a smart Maritimer – which I am – I had to rescue the lobster," said George Froy of St. Albert, Alta.

"I mean, come on, Alberta has good hospitality. You gotta take him as far as you can go."

Froy and his wife Annette have placed Lucky and the lobster trap in the back of their pickup truck and will take him as far as Winnipeg, where he said that city's tourism department "wants their paws on him for a while."

Packed close to the lobster trap on the truck bed is another rather unusual cargo item that also originates on the east coast.

The Froys drove to New Brunswick to pick up George's late grandfather's old Shrine clown car, which will be restored and put back into service in Alberta.
