Things are back to normal in the Machar Avenue area following a natural gas scare Monday afternoon that forced several homes to be evacuated and traffic to be detoured around the scene.

Emergency crews scrambled to the area around 2:30 p.m. after a two-inch gas line snapped while road crews were working on the street. Police, fire and Union Gas crews were all dispatched to help deal with the problem.

About 12 homes were evacuated as a precaution and traffic along the busy Algoma and Court Street corridors were diverted away from the area. The all-clear was finally signalled at about 6:30 p.m. and families were allowed to return to their homes.

Union Gas officials say five homes were left without natural gas overnight because of the break. They were all re-connected this morning
