MacLean, Shields strike OUA skiing gold

Thunderwolves men's and women's teams in second place at the OUA Nordic Skiing Championships in Sault Ste. Marie.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. -- A pair of Lakehead University skiers were golden at the OUA Nordic Skiing Championships in Sault. Ste. Marie, Ont.

Alannah MacLean and Andy Shields on Saturday claimed top spot in their respective races. MacLean edged Carleton's Zoe Williams by 14.2 seconds in the 15-kilometre race, following her first-place finish in Friday's 10-kilometre interval start.

Shields, who took second in Friday's 10-kilometre skate race, edged out Carleton's Aidan Kirkham for the victory.

"Alannah and Andy came away with dominant wins today in a tough field with Alannah securing her first OUA MVP after many years of being competitive for the overall title," said Thunderwolves coach Adam Kates, in a release issued late Saturday night.

In the team competition, the Wolves placed four skiers in the top 10 in both the men's and women's category. On the women's side, Shaylynn Loewen was fourth, Erika Mihell was sixth and Camille Hamm took ninth.

For the men, Erik Schlyter was sixth, Conor McGovern crossed in seventh and Cameron Roe rounded out the top 10.

Heading into Sunday's final day of competition, the Thunderwolves men's and women's teams are second, behind Carleton.

In the women's competition, Carleton has 42 points to Lakehead's 51 after two days, while the Ravens men lead Lakehead 49 to 64, with one race to go.
