Main north core intersection to reopen Friday

Intersection paving is complete at Red River Road and Court Street

THUNDER BAY — A main intersection in the city's north downtown core is set to reopen after being closed for the last several weeks due to ongoing construction activity.

As of Friday, the Red River Road and Court Street intersection will be open to traffic, says city project manager Brian Newman.

"Next year, this intersection will look just like the Park Street intersection along with these crosswalks; it'll be a paving stone detail. We did this this year in order to allow the trucks to move through next year and not destroy the the new surface," Newman said on Thursday.

Newman added that the intersection will be a four-way stop during the winter.

"So just getting all this done to this point, it's been almost miraculous, but these traffic signals will change next year. They're gonna be decorative [to match] the rest of the street lights," he said.

The city will be installing new lock stone at two of the new corners of the intersection next week, weather permitting.

Newman also noted that there will be a top coat of asphalt for the small sections of Court Street between Red River Road and Park Street, as well as on the north side of the intersection by the parking garage.

"Probably half a day's work, three-quarters a day's work, if the weather permits, we'll get that part done as well," he said.

With the work that's been completed this year, it sets the project up well for the next phase in 2024.

"This project was a huge endeavour. In order to get the two-year project going, we had to do certain certain parts of the underground this year. Everything we wanted to get done, we got done," Newman said.

When the work starts up again next spring, crews will be starting at Cumberland Street and moving up Red River Road towards Court Street in a phased approach.
