A man accused of a prison-riot hostage taking will face a two-day trial in November.

Justin Beaver, 24, appeared in Superior Court on Monday where he stands accused of aggravated assault and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Beaver is one of several men charged following a Dec. 7 prison riot at the Thunder Bay District Jail. He is also accused of taking a correctional officer hostage during that riot.

About 70 inmates took control of the protective custody floor demanding prescription drugs and cigarettes. They reportedly destroyed the floor during the 12-hour riot.

Two months later police charged five of the inmates, including Beaver.

On Monday, Mr. Justice Fregeau approved a request from the Crown to set a trial date.

The date has been set for Nov. 2 and 3.
