THUNDER BAY — Police in Thunder Bay have charged a 22 year-old man with a number of offences after he allegedly drove drunk and fled from police.

According to a media release issued Wednesday afternoon, police said officers were called about a possibly-impaired driver Tuesday afternoon in the area of the 1,800 block of Victoria Avenue East.

Police said the first officer spoke with the driver who allegedly showed signs he was impaired.

The driver, police said, then started the vehicle and sped off.

Another officer subsequently noticed the motorist driving into oncoming lanes of traffic in order to pass other vehicles, according to police.

The officers did not pursue the driver, police said, out of concern for public safety but the suspect and the vehicle were later found.

The 22 year-old, who police did not name in their release, was charged with impaired driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle, flight from police and resisting arrest.

He was expected to make a court appearance on Wednesday.
