Police investigating a weekend assault have arrested a Thunder Bay man connected to an unrelated armed robbery that took place in May.

Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Uniform Patrol Branch were dispatched to Waverly Park just after 6 p.m. on Friday, July 10 following reports of an assault that had just occurred.

When police arrived they located a male victim. The accused was still in the area and was also located.

Police learned the victim saw a male who appeared to be unconscious in the park. The victim approached the male to check on his welfare, at which point the male became conscious and assaulted the victim.

Police arrested the accused at the scene. An investigation revealed this accused was the suspect of an earlier armed robbery.

Police were originally dispatched to the reported armed robbery around noon on Friday, May 22 at the LCBO at 100 Cumberland Street.

Police learned a male accused entered the store and attempted to leave with unpaid merchandise. When the accused was confronted by staff he showed what appeared to be a firearm. The accused fled the area before police arrived.

An ongoing investigation led police to identify the accused of this armed robbery. The suspect’s identity was known to police prior to the July 10 assault.
