THUNDER BAY - A Brampton man was sentenced on Wednesday to three years of custody in connection to a 2018 drug bust where police found more than $89,000 in cash, four handguns and cocaine at a Thunder Bay residence.

Jordon Sutherland pleaded guilty to one count of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000, possession of a loaded prohibited handgun and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order at his sentencing hearing on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Court heard Sutherland was arrested by police after officers received information in late 2018 that a Thunder Bay residence was being used for trafficking drugs, federal crown prosecutor Arturo Acosta said.

Police began to surveil an apartment and were able to identify suspects they believed were trafficking drugs at a Vickers Street address.

On Dec. 20, 2018, police executed a drug search warrant for a Vickers Street residence and upon entering located a sleeping man, who was later identified as Sutherland.

During the search, police found four handguns, ammunition, electronic scales, a drug press, four cellphones, more than $89,000 in cash and 332 grams of cocaine. At the time of the offence, Sutherland was prohibited from possessing firearms as a result of a previous robbery conviction.

Sutherland has been in custody since his arrest on Dec. 20, 2018. He was granted enhanced credit for the 616 days he has spent in pre-sentence custody and has 171 days going forward left to serve on his sentence.

He also faces a lifetime weapons prohibition.

All items seized during the search warrant including the $89,545 was ordered to be forfeited to the Crown.
