THUNDER BAY -  A man who appeared in Thunder Bay plea court on Monday for various offences including breaking the glass panel of a motel door has been ordered to pay $802 for the damages he caused.

Justice Francesco Valente sentenced 32-year-old Ryan Finlayson to 90 days in custody for five offences that occurred throughout February and April on Monday, May 4 in Thunder Bay.

Court heard Finlayson had been visiting another male who was temporarily staying at a hotel in Longlac in February. Crown counsel Piera Pasloski told the court the two males got into an argument which escalated to pushing and shoving.

As Finlayson was leaving the room, he broke the glass panel of the door which resulted in $802 in damages, Pasloski said.

With respect to the offences that occurred on April 12,  Finlayson and his common-law wife were walking along Highway 11 in Longlac when he threatened he was going to “kick the crap out” of her, Crown said.

During this offence, he was bound by a probation order.

A few days later and after being granted bail, Finlayson was arrested again after being found outside of his residence past a court-ordered curfew.

Finlayson is a father to two girls and works in various roles including firefighting and at a coffee shop, according to his counsel.

Finlayson has struggled with several Gladue factors including substance abuse issues with alcohol and drugs. His father was also a survivor of Canada’s residential school system.

Valente sentenced Finlayson to 90 days of custody to be followed by an 18-month probation order.

Finlayson was granted 24 days of pre-sentence custody.
