THUNDER BAY — A man convicted of manslaughter late last year is spending nearly four more years in jail.

Daniel Blais pleaded guilty to manslaughter last year for his role in the death of 30-year-old Cody Bulmer.  A sentencing hearing was held in December and on Jan. 29, he was sentenced to eight years in custody minus credit for time served, leaving him with 3.9 years of custody remaining.

Blais and Josh Kakegamic were charged with second-degree murder in June 2022 following Bulmer’s death on May 23, 2022. Bulmer’s body was found inside a residence on the 1400 block of Balmoral Street.

The charge against Kakegamic has since been withdrawn.

The Crown had asked for a sentence of eight years minus 1,431 days (3.9 years) credit for pre-trial custody and the defence had asked for five years in jail minus credit for time served.

During the sentencing hearing, the court heard Bulmer was the victim of a prolonged beating that least 15 to 20 minutes and that Blais had assaulted Bulmer after discovering Bulmer had stolen from him.

Bulmer suffered 79 external injuries, including blunt force trauma and lacerations to several organs including his lung, kidney, spleen and intestines.
