MARATHON, ON — The tourism industry on the north shore of Lake Superior is getting a boost from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.
NOHFC announced $450,000 in funding Wednesday for the Town of Marathon to develop the Pebble Beach tourist area.
The two-kilometre pebbly/cobblestone beach is unique due to its colourful rounded stones that have been polished smooth by wave action over thousands of years.
Marathon CAO Daryl Skworchinski says the money will be used to help create a focal viewing point for Lake Superior that will encourage tourists as well as local residents to visit the area.
The viewing section will be upgraded, including improvements for accessibility.
The project also includes seasonal washrooms and updated parking, lighting and signage.
