THUNDER BAY – One quarter of great basketball isn’t enough at the OUA level.

The Lakehead Thunderwolves found that out the hard way on Friday night, as they took the court against the visiting McMaster Marauders.

Despite outscoring their opponent 31-10 in the second quarter to take a five-point lead at halftime, the Wolves were badly outgunned in the other three quarters, and wound up on the wrong end of an 81-54 decision at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.

The Marauders opened with a 24-8 shellacking in the first quarter, then outscored LU 20-6 in the third and 27-9 in the fourth and went on to a 27-point victory, handing Lakehead its second loss in three outings to open the 2024-25 season.

Amy Stinson led all scorers with 23 points and also hauled in nine rebounds. Emily Frankovic added 18 for the winning side.

Lakehead was led by Ally Burke, who finished with 17. Thunder Bay’s Sara Azzolin had nine points and eight boards while Keira Chow grabbed 10 rebounds.

Lakehead and unbeaten McMaster (3-0) will tangle again on Saturday night. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
