THUNDER BAY -- A major American retail giant is headed to Thunder Bay.

Marshalls, a self-described off-price store, will be setting up shop at Intercity Shopping Centre, taking over the space being vacated by Home Sense's looming departure from the mall.

HomeSense won't be leaving the city, but instead will join forces with sister company Winners Apparel in a combined store location at the Thunder Centre.

All three companies are owned by TJX Canada.

Company spokesperson Emily Lamb on Thursday said the new Marshalls store is expected to open in the fall of 2018.

Marshall's first arrived in Canada in 2011, with 41 open in Canada at the start of 2017 and 16 more expected to open by year's end. The company operates more than 1,000 locations in the United States.

HomeSense, one of 101 stores in Canada, has been at Intercity since 2011, while Winners has been open at its 11th Avenue location since the late 1990s.

Lamb confirmed the two stores will be joining together at a newly constructed, 12,000 square metre Thunder Centre location on the south side of the Toys R Us building. It's scheduled to open next spring.

Lamb said the existing Winners will close once the new store opens.

Intercity general manager Stacey Ball told Thunder Bay Television the mall's management is excited to have a popular, new store like Marshalls coming to Thunder Bay.

Off-price stores like Marshalls offer deeply discounted brands, usually buying cancelled orders, overstocked product from manufacturers or closeout deals at end of season.

"The majority of product we sell is brand name merchandise generally sold at prices 20%-60% less than comparable product. Most of our merchandise is fashionable, current season styles. A small percentage is past season, or timeless classics, which we also offer at amazing savings to you," the company says on its website.
