Massive plane returns to Thunder Bay Airport

Antonov An-124 carried cargo for Bombardier

THUNDER BAY -- One of the largest aircraft in the world has paid a return visit to Thunder Bay.

Although it has touched down in the city three times since last summer, the arrival of the Antonov AN-124 cargo plane on Wednesday afternoon still had local residents craning their necks for a view and taking some photos or video.

Bombardier has chartered the long-range aircraft to bring in parts—reportedly streetcar cabs—from a factory in Europe for the TTC cars being manufactured at the local plant.

The giant plane is as high as a seven-storey building.

It completed the 7,500-kilometre flight from Austria in just under 10 hours.

The aircraft is expected to take off on Thursday evening.
