The Matawa First Nations are optimistic today’s federal budget will include funding to help them connect five remote First Nation communities to a fibre-optic broadband internet.
In 2010, the federal and provincial governments announced $81 million to connect 26 NAN First Nations to the fibre optic network.
However, five of the Matawa communities were dropped from that program due to funding issues.
atawa is now proceeding with a project to connect those communities.
Economic development advisor Jason Rasevych says broadband access is essential to remote First Nations, and they hope the federal government will understand their need.
