THUNDER BAY — Mayor Ken Boshcoff has released a statement expressing condolences following the death of Jenna Ostberg in Thunder Bay last month.
The 21-year-old woman was found deceased in a Ray Boulevard home on Dec. 30 after a call was made to 911, followed by a second call to "cancel."
According to the province's Special Investigations Unit, police did not respond to either call, and it is currently investigating the circumstances.
In a brief statement Tuesday on behalf of the city, Boshcoff said: "We offer our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the loved ones and those impacted by this tragic death."
He said TBPS is cooperating with the SIU as it conducts its investigation, but that "as a result of the SIU's involvement, the city cannot provide any further comment. Once the investigation is over, Chief Darcy Fleury will provide a media brief and address the matter publicly."
Last week, the family of the deceased woman issued a statement through Nishnawbe Aski Nation to ask for privacy, but also expressing concerns.
"The family’s fear however, is their daughter is the latest victim of inadequate and unjust policing services received by First Nation women in particular in Thunder Bay," it said.
The Thunder Bay Police Association, which also offered condolences to the family, called on SIU Director Martino to release further details about the case with the aim of "ensuring transparency” among community members and “to safeguard trust between police members and the community members we serve.”
