THUNDER BAY – Krista McCarville and her teammates have dug an early hole at the Scotties Tournament of hearts.

The Northern Ontario representatives couldn’t hold onto an early 3-1 lead on Sunday afternoon and lost a 6-5 heartbreaker to Saskatchewan’s Skylar Ackerman to fall to 1-2 after Draw 5 in Calgary.

McCarville, who trailed 1-0 after two, evened things up in the third and stole single in the fourth and fifth to take a two-shot lead.

Ackerman, one of two clubs sitting at 3-0, tied things up with a pair in the sixth, and after McCarville jumped in front with a single in the seventh, added two more in the eighth to go up 5-4. McCarville was held to a single in the ninth and Ackerman won it with one of her own, with hammer, in the 10th.

McCarville, lead Sarah Potts, second Kendra Lilly, third Andrea Kelly and fifth Ashley Sippala, dropped to sixth place in the Pool A standings.

Alberta and Saskatchewan top all teams at 3-0 and B.C. Corryn Brown and Canada’s Kerri Einarson sit at 2-1. Quebec’s Laurie St-Georges is alone in fifth at 1-1.

Team Northern Ontario has a pair of matches on the schedule for Monday, starting with P.E.I.’s winless Jane DiCarlo rink at 10:30 am. They’ll take on Newfoundland and Labrador at 8:30 p.m.
