SASKATOON, Sask. -- Team McCarville did not get off to a winning start on Saturday to open the Olympic curling trials in Saskatoon.

The Northern Ontario rink gave up a trio of deuces to 2014 Olympic champion Jennifer Jones, and fell 8-5 in nine ends.

Jones (1-0) scored a pair in the first, but McCarville, Sarah Potts, Ashley Sippala and Kendra Lilly battled back with a pair of their own in the second. The teams traded points with hammer in the third and fourth, but Jones picked up two in the fifth to take the lead for good.

In other opening draw action, Jaqueline Harrison edged Rachel Homan 6-5, former Sudbury curler Tracy Fleury knocked off Rachel Einarson 7-4, and Casey Scheidegger outlasted Laura Walker 6-4.

McCarville takes on Homan on Sunday morning. The Ottawa skip finished out of the medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics and is a two-time Scotties champion.
