THUNDER BAY — A fire at a south-side apartment complex has left one person dead.

According to Kevin Anderson, acting division chief at Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, the fire broke out in a second-floor unit of the six-storey McIvor Court building on Lincoln Street at approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

The victim who was taken to hospital for treatment, was found in a bedroom inside the unit and later succumbed to their injuries.

Anderson said the Ontario Fire Marshall concluded its investigation on Thursday and nothing suspicious was detected.

“They deemed it was an accidental cause of the fire and most likely due to improper disposal of smoking materials in that unit,” Anderson said.

No further details about the victim have yet been released.
