THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue responded to a structural fire in a residence on McTavish Street on Saturday.

The alarm came for the house on fire at around 11 a.m.

The dispatcher took several reports, resulting in a second alarm before crews arrived.

The second alarm brought additional units to the scene.

Six pumper trucks, one aerial ladder truck and one command unit, responded to control the fire.

When crews arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames at the rear of the home.

The first pumper crew that arrived applied water from outside before moving to an interior fire attack.

Multiple crews worked quickly to knock down most of the fire and bring the situation under control, according to a release issued Saturday evening by the TBFR.

The TBFR prevented the fire from extending into the house's attic, but the house suffered fire, smoke and water damage.

TBFR searched the house and confirmed no one was inside the residence.

The air quality of the houses on either side of the involved house was also checked to ensure the safety of the occupants.

One house was evacuated and ventilated using fire department equipment to remove carbon monoxide that had moved in due to the neighbouring fire.

When the house was safe to enter, occupants were allowed to return.

No injuries were sustained to civilians or firefighters, the release said.
