Michipicoten bulk carrier taking on water

The ship struck an unknown object South West of Isle Royale.

THUNDER BAY – The U.S. Coast Guard personnel responded to a report that the 689-foot bulk carrier Michipicoten was taking on water in Lake Superior near Grand Portage, Minn., after receiving a report at approximately 7 a.m. on Saturday.

The ship struck an unknown object southwest of Isle Royale. It was underway to Thunder Bay, accompanied by the Edwin H. Gott.

Half of the 22-person crew has since been removed from the vessel for safety.

Damage to the vessel will be investigated once the situation is stabilized.

U.S. Coast Guard, Border Patrol, and National Park Service vessels remain actively involved.

By 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, the ship could be seen in Thunder Bay harbour.
