THUNDER BAY -- The OPP's underwater search and recovery team is looking for a missing boater on the Kaministiquia River.

Thunder Bay OPP Detachment Commander Jim Graham said a 56-year-old man was reported missing Saturday evening after he did not return after boating in the Forbes River Road and Silver Falls Road area.

The family of the man found the boat downriver near the end of John Street Road area Sunday evening.

“The OPP is out here (Monday) searching the river with our side-scanning sonar looking for any signs of what happened,” Graham said.

“Right now we’re searching the most likely areas. Technically the search area is from the point of last seen to the point where the boat was found and that’s almost 20 kilometres of river.”

Graham added there are a few sets of rapids within that search area and that it is unclear what caused the man to become separated from the boat.

The recovery team is starting the search at the Peuramaki Bridge Loop.
