THUNDER BAY — A public access point at Surprise Lake on Dog Lake Road is back to normal after an incident that appears to have occurred sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

Someone used equipment to excavate a trench across the boat launch at Surprise Lake Narrows, creating an impediment to visitors wanting to get their watercraft onto the lake.

Photos of the trench were later posted on social media.

The access point, located on Crown land, is frequently utilized by people who don't own camps on the lake as a base for a few hours of recreation or fishing.

After learning about the trench on Monday, Ministry of Natural Resources staff were dispatched to investigate Tuesday, and found the boat launch had been repaired by an unknown party.

A spokesperson for the ministry said it is illegal for any excavation or other work to be done on Crown land without a work permit under the Public Lands Act.
