THUNDER BAY — The Ministry of Natural Resources has issued a bulletin about recent bear sightings in the City of Thunder Bay.

It's telling residents to be aware and to take the necessary steps to avoid attracting bears to residential neighbourhoods.

There have been numerous reports of nuisance bears prowling various parts of the city, particularly in the Northwood area, in the last few weeks.

The MNR said last week that it had brought a mobile trap to the Northwood area with the aim of catching and removing bears humanely.

A spokesperson said Wednesday that no bear has been trapped to date, but the ministry continues to work with Thunder Bay Police.

In a statement, the ministry urged residents and businesses to reduce household and commercial attractants.

"Bears are often attracted to things such as garbage, bird food including suet, seed and nectar, odours from barbecues, and ripe fruit left on trees or on the ground. Removing these can help keep bears out of the area."

The ministry also said it's important to note that the same bear can result in multiple sightings.

If a bear poses an immediate threat to public safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour, residents are advised to call 911 or Thunder Bay Police at (807) 684-1200.

The MNR said advice on removing bear attractants can be obtained by calling the Bear Wise reporting line toll-free at 1-866-524-2327.
