THUNDER BAY – The provincial NDP is expected to nominate former MPP Judith Monteith-Farrell to run in Thunder Bay-Atikokan.

Monteith-Farrell held the seat from 2018 to 2022, but was defeated after four years in office by Conservative Kevin Holland.

The party, in a letter to supporters, said they plan to acclaim Monteith-Farrell on Tuesday, during a virtual meeting with party faithful.

All current members of the NDP are eligible to vote.

Holland and the Conservatives have confirmed he plans to seek re-election in the next provincial elections.

Neither the Liberals nor the Green Party have publicly announced their candidates in the riding.

The NDP’s Lise Vaugeois is seeking re-election in Thunder Bay-Superior North. None of the other parties have officially announced candidates at this time.

Premier Doug Ford is widely expected to call the election on Wednesday, according to reports by CBC and the Canadian Press.Ford's mandate runs through 2026, but he has said he needs a new mandate to deal with the threat of tariffs on Canadian goods promised by U.S. President Donald Trump.
