More changes to hospital entrances and parking

The hospital asks that all patients and their families plan ahead and allow extra time for parking.

THUNDER BAY — Getting into the hospital, and finding somewhere to park, may take longer than usual with some areas closed off for construction.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is directing the public to use its west entrance, located about 50 meters to the left of the revolving doors at the main entrance, which are now closed.

As of Monday, the renal entrance and the east gate of the Eagle (A1) parking lot are also closed due to the construction.

With the closure on the renal entrances, dialysis patients are asked to use the the west entrance, where aides will be stationed to assist patients accessing the renal department.

“For everyone’s safety, please adhere to all construction fencing, barricades and safety signs,” said the hospital in a media release.

“The construction site will be clearly marked and all unauthorized personnel are restricted from entering construction areas. We encourage everyone to use designated walkways and stay alert while navigating around the construction zones.”

The electronic bus sign has also been temporarily relocated to an area near the west entrance, with a temporary pick-up and drop-off moved to the roundabout in front of the nearby medical centre building.

“Please follow posted signage as this will be one-way traffic only to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow. Security will be posted to assist with wayfinding and ensure the flow of traffic,” said the hospital.

The construction is also affecting the availability of parking, although the hospital notes that parking for 15 minutes or less in any visitor lot will be free as long as a ticket is provided upon exit.

The Fish (A3) parking lot and roadway in front of the cancer centre entrance will be closed until mid to late June.

The Bear (B1) parking lot also remains closed throughout construction, leaving the Moose (B2) and Eagle (A1) visitor parking lots open.

“When drop off / pick up zones are congested, parking in Moose (B2) provides a great option while waiting,” said the centre.

The Coyote (C2), Squirrel (C1) and Deer (D) lots are still available for patients accessing only the emergency department and labour and delivery — other areas are not accessible through these entrances.

There are some accessible parking spots are also located close to the centre in the Eagle (A1) lot.

“We know that with construction comes inconvenience and we appreciate your understanding and patience as we move forward with this important project bringing cardiovascular surgery to Northwestern Ontario and closer to home for patients and families,” said the hospital.

It added it will continue to provide updates as construction of the new cardiovascular wing progresses.

The hospital reminds residents that these changes are temporary and essential to support the expansion and improvement of the hospital.

Residents looking for parking lot locations can refer to the centre’s map and find the latest information on the centre’s social media or website.
