Despite an announcement on the future of the Thunder Bay Generating Station last week, the regional energy task force is asking for more power.

The province revealed last week that the plant would be converted to advanced biomass and run for at least another five years.

But the supply contract for 15,000 tonnes of biomass has the Common Voice Northwest energy task force worried that won't be enough during droughts or cold weather.

According to their numbers, 75,000 tonnes would be needed in cold weather and 120,000 in droughts just to meet the region's current energy needs.

"That will ensure that the plant will run in combination with Atikokan" task force co-chair Iain Angus said.

MPP Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay-Atikokan) said during the announcement that a new east west line would be able to import energy to the region should there be a need.

But Angus said that line won't be operating until 2018. The plant is expected to be converted by 2015. The task force is confident that the province will listen.

"They keep coming around to our side of things," Angus said.
