Mosswood brings ice bikes to Thunder Bay

Ice bikes from Kenora are in Thunder Bay, and Mosswood Adventures and Rentals will be out with them this weekend.

THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay got its first taste of ice biking on Saturday.

Vic Moss, owner and operator of Mosswood Adventures and Rentals brought ice bikes all the way from Kenora to Thunder Bay for some weekend fun.

“We're just hosting a public ice bike night for families, folks that want to come down and brace the winter.  We have our tandem, which is our double rider bikes, and our single rider trikes here tonight,” Moss said.

The bikes were out on Saturday at the North End Community Centre from 4 to 6 p.m. for a drop-in at a cost of $10 + tax.

The festivities will continue on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Northwood Playfield on James Street as part of the City of Thunder Bay’s Winter Fun Days. There is no cost on Sunday.

Moss said ice biking is just how it sounds.

“It's a bike that goes on the ice. All of our models have skates or skis in the front, and then in the back we have fat tires,” she said.

This was the first time Mosswood has brought the bikes to Thunder Bay, and Moss said it definitely won't be the last, as requests have already poured in.

Riders 18 months and over can be passengers on tandem bikes, and peddlers start at age 6, Moss said.

“You got to try it once in your life,” Moss said, “you might as well do it this weekend while we're here. I have never met anyone that didn't have fun and had a smile on their face after doing ice biking, so I think that's proof in itself.”
