Carrick Park Rink is open for the season

THUNDER BAY – As the city sees more and more winter weather, residents are seeing more opportunities for beloved outdoor activities.

Most of the city’s outdoor rinks are open and ready to go as the city is finally getting conditions that favour ice making.

“The weather has been more supportive for flooding,” said Cory Halvorsen, manager of parks and open spaces. “Although we have had snow events which have kind of slowed things down for flooding.”

The rink at the marina was the first of the city-run rinks to open last weekend. Halvorsen said most of the other rinks are expected to be open by this weekend, and residents can keep an eye out for which rinks will be available on the city’s website.

“We will be updating throughout the week,” he said.

“If any of the sites are ready to be used, we’ll be updating the website where we have the map which shows all the sites.”

Skating has always been one of the major winter pastimes in the city and Halvorsen said residents have been excited to start this year.

“I’ve been out and have seen a lot of people on the rinks and using them,” he said. “It’s very nice to see that the season has arrived for outdoor skating and hockey.”

Only a few sites on each side of town are likely to not be ready this weekend. Keep up to date by checking the city’s website.
