THUNDER BAY – Now that winter has really begun in the region, it’s time for residents to sharpen their skis.
Daniel Kardas, co-owner of Mount Bald Ski Area, said that he’s glad they’re able to once again be up and running.
“We're feeling great, everyone’s having a blast, we have a little bit of a park here for the kids and the freestyle team, Thunder Bay freestyle's out here, coaches [are] here training and everyone is always excited to early snow,” he said.
“We've been waiting a long time, 2 weeks ago we were at plus 18 and now we have snow and we're open and we're just working our way up the mountain.”
Kardas says that some parts of the ski area are open and more will come as the snow makers make their way up the mountain now that the weather is finally right.
“This is a decent time for sure, we've opened definitely a lot earlier in October, like late October, we've done that before, but this season the weather conditions have been really warm, so we're just waiting for the right window,” he said.
“And then we started making snow about a week and a half ago and here we are working way up the mountain; we almost got the gold and we're almost up there in the shotgun, so yeah, it's exciting 2022-23 season at Mount Baldy.”
Kardas says the ski area is still waiting on the TSSA for an inspection of their new chairlift, but once that’s done, he hopes to get the whole mountain opened soon.
