Mount Baldy opens two of their runs with a third to follow

While many weren't thrilled with over 20 centimeters of snow in recent days, Mount Baldy Ski Area welcomed the heavy snowfall.

THUNDER BAY – Mount Baldy has been running their snow guns non-stop up until the recent snowfall which allowed them to move most of their snow guns to the main hill and open up the Gold and Hornet runs for local skiers and snowboarders, with plans to have their Shotgun run open on Dec. 30.

“The snow is definitely helping, which is amazing. The last couple of days have been snowing like crazy. It’s great to see all the people come out and with their boards and skis and the tubing has been busy also,” said co-owner Daniel Kardas.

Kardas thinks it will take around two weeks to open the main run, but if Thunder Bay sees another big snowfall like the one over the Christmas break, that timeline could be much shorter.

More natural snow would also be necessary to open the Lookout run as it depends entirely on natural snow.

“The Lookout, generally we don’t have snow-making capacity right now, maybe next season. But, that’s all-natural snow so we kind of got to wait on Mother Nature,” said Kardas.

“And it is facing the lake and you’ve got a lot of wind on that side, so it’s a bit windblown,”

“We do take the groomer and we’ve got windrows up there... which we’re trying to catch as much as possible for free."

The hill is now operating with increased hours, which can be found on their website for winter enthusiasts.
