Movies in the park returns for final year

The city's Movie Nights in the Park series, a victim of budget cuts in 2024, will screen a mix of new and old film favourites for free in local parks over the coming weeks.

THUNDER BAY — Over the next three Thursdays, a city film series will visit different neighbourhoods welcoming the community to come watch a movie in the park.

This coming Thursday, Aug. 10, the Movies in the Park series will kick off with Encanto showing on the big screen at Vickers Park.

Showtimes begin at dusk, or around 9 p.m. Movie-goers are encouraged to come early and bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets and to enjoy some lawn games before the film.

The city will screen Back to the Future at Boulevard Lake on Aug. 17, before returning to Vickers Park on Aug. 24 for Super Mario Bros.

Later in the fall, the series will conclude with an indoor matinee showing of Grease on Oct. 15 at the 55 Plus Centre.

This year's Movie Nights In The Park series will be the last one offered by the city, after city council voted to ax the program as part of cuts to the 2024 budget
