THUNDER BAY -- A first-degree murder charge against a Thunder Bay man in connection with a shooting incident late last year has been withdrawn.

A hearing was held in November 2023 for 25-year-old Russel Brayden Moonias, where the charge of first-degree murder was withdrawn at the request of the Crown.

Moonias was first charged in the death of 24-year-old Abdullahi Mohamed Ali of Toronto. Ali’s body was located on Oct. 15, 2023 at a residence on the 300 block of Ogden Street.

Investigators with the Thunder Bay Police Service confirmed at the time that a firearm was involved in the homicide and it was connected to the city's illegal drug trade.

The investigation into Ali’s death remains open and ongoing. It is the only homicide investigation of the seven in 2023 that remains unsolved.
