TORONTO – Thunder Bay goaltender Matt Murray’s future with the Toronto Maple Leafs is up in the air.

The NHL team waived the 30-year-old Murray, who won Stanley Cup titles with Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017.

Murray can be claimed on waivers by another National Hockey League club, and failing that, he’s expected to be assigned to the Leafs minor-league team, the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies.

Murray signed a one-year, $875,000 deal with the Leafs on July 1.

The team is expected to roll out Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz in net.

Murray played three games for the Marlies last season, recording a 4.03 goals against average and a 1-2-0 record in his return from bilateral hip surgery.

The veteran netminder made two preseason appearances for the Leafs, stopping all seven shots he faced in his most recent outing on Sept. 26 against Montreal. He finished with a 3.67 goals against average and a .833 save percentage in two appearances.
