MUSKRAT DAM FIRST NATION — Muskrat Dam First Nation, 600 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, is going into lockdown status.

Chief Vernon Morris made the announcement Monday.

There has been no disclosure of any active COVID-19 cases in Muskrat Dam, but concerns are growing in remote Northwestern Ontario First Nations because of recent cases in three communities

Chief Morris was not immediately available for comment, but a notice posted online states that under Muskrat dam's COVID-19 protocol, all personal travel to urban centres, as well as inter-community travel in the North, will be suspended as of Sept. 26.

In the interim, community members are cautioned and discouraged from travelling.

The protocol permits travel only for medical purposes and for the maintenance of essential services.

Trips must also be approved in advance by a Pandemic Committee.

Other provisions are also in place to reduce the risk of bringing COVID-19 into the community.
