While not conclusive, a photo of a cloud dropping from the sky taken near Thunder Bay Thursday night looks to be a lowering Environment Canada says.

Nathan Hewtison submitted the photo Thursday evening after seeing the cloud near Hwy 61 and 608. He tweeted that Hewitson the cloud "dropped down, started turning, drifted toward US."

Environment Canada meteorologist Trudy Kidd said she and her colleagues can't determine what happened without more evidence, specifically video but it appears to be what's called a lowering, which happens when a cloud gets caught up in a vortex during a supercell.

"It could be. It's really hard to tell," she said.

Kidd said with everyone having a smartphone, weather events like a lowering are popping up more.

"They're definitely a cool sight to see," she said.
