TORONTO — Starting on August 1, northwestern Ontario natural gas customers will pay more for their fuel as a result of the federal carbon pricing program.

The Ontario Energy Board last week approved an application from Enbridge Gas to begin to bill, collect and remit the federal carbon charge from its customers for the natural gas they use.

For an average household, the extra cost will be about $86 a year.

Enbridge says the charge will appear as a separate line item on customer bills, reflecting 3.91 cents per cubic meter of gas used.

The Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act applies a carbon charge to fossil fuels including natural gas sold within Ontario, with the revenue remitted to the federal government.
